Ophthalmogy: New hope for macular degeneration: flexible retinal implants

Implants are being developed which mimic photoreceptors of the light-sensitive retinal tissue at the back of the eye. To date these have been rigid which are very difficult to fit to the back of the eye. Now however, the first flexible retinal implant has been developed and is under testing.  Conditions such as age-related macular degeneration could be treated by these new implants.  A glasses mounted micro-camera would capture images and beam them onto the implant in the form of near infra-red signals. The implant then converts the light signal to electric impulses which create a pattern which is fed into the neural tissue in the vicinity.  The implants have been developed by Rostram Dinyari at Stanford University.

While current cutting edge ophthalmic technology may seem like science fiction, it was only around 20 years ago that techniques used widely today, such as phaecoemulsification and even simple intra-ocular-implants seemed also in that bracket.

Rose Charities supports a spectrum of ophthalmic assistance from training of community eye workers through optometry, ophthalmic medicine and surgery to restore sight or prevent blindness to corneal transplant ‘eye banks’ . Rose Charities New Zealand is foremost in this area in the Rose Charities network.

Firstborn donors...

Oldest siblings give away 25 per cent less money than non firstborns or only children.. !
A study  by Alexandre Courtiol at the Institute of Evolutionary Sciences, Montpellier, France has indicated the finding above. The study paired 510 students with anonymous partners to play a finance-based game though with real cash rewards at the end. The game included multiple strategies of varying selfishness relating to degrees of trust and the interpretation was that firstborns are 25 per cent less trusting and recriprocating..  Explanation  is that there may be a limited amount of energy that people can invest in cooperative alliances so it may be that the firstborn cooperates less outside the family because they cooperate  more within it.  An alternative theory is that it may be that within families, firsbourns actually cooperate less in an attempt to maintain their initial monopoly on parental care, and interact with others in the same way as adults.

Copenhagen 2009

As we enjoy Christmas this year.....
Sea levels are rising, glaciers retreating, Arctic ice disappearing, Alaskan permafrost melting, tropics expanding, trees growing higher and higher up the sides of mountains.    Carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas is accumulating in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases warm the atmosphere. Huge changes in weather can be expected and their affects already being seen.  Using a combination of observation, modeling studies and direct measurement since the 1970's other explanations for global warming have been ruled out.
At this '11th hour', may Copenhagen give mankind  a future...

Computers for Rwandan children

Rwanda plans for every child in the country between the age of 9 and 12 to have laptop by 2012.  Each laptop will have inter- or intranet connection to download electronic books or educational software provided free. The computers will be sold by the 'One Laptop per Child (OLPC) organization and an initial order for 100,000 has been made for $181 each. Under development by OLPC however is cheaper, but more advanced and rugged model which could be as low as $75 each.  OLPC says that its research in Rwanda and elsewhere suggests that children work harder and think more creatively with a laptop. In addition the introduction of laptops to a community can have the additional effect of stimulating small business in their servicing, upgrading and selling of cheap peripherals.

Rose Charities Sri Lanka is planning the introduction of educational laptops in its education programs when resources  permit. Rose Charities microcredit (www.RoseMicroCredit.org) is also assisting small businesses involved with computer repair and servicing

Stand Tall School - Nicole writes...

Nicole Schouela  (Stand Tall) writes from Kampala today..

"I'm back in Kampala and after several days of chronic jet lag, I feel like myself again and even have the strength to send some progress photos of Stand Tall School. The site looks exceptional and Patrick, the engineer, tells me that before I go home in a week and a half, there will be actual walls on the buildings. That will warrant more photos. I posted some of these photos on Facebook and am sending the link so you can access them even if you are not a Facebook friend (be warned: everyone succumbs eventually to the lure of Facebook). I can hear a chorus of "nope, not me". O.K> so just click on the link below to access the photos.  Happy Holidays.."
